Caught the English Beat at the Ogden last night. Dave Wakeling was heading it, but no Ranking Roger, but this guy Antonee First Class taking on the Roger role of Toasting, etc. I guess Dave does the US shows and Ranking does the UK shows. Interesting... Odd remembering the young (and thin) Dave Wakeling of the 80s, and then seeing this heavier set MAN up there with the irrepressible grin and positive energy, and trying to reconcile the two in my head. He still had the voice and the music was so great. The crowd was an interesting mix of 40+ and teenagers. It was an all ages show, and most of the kids seem to show up for RX Bandits, but they seemed to be up for the Beat. My nephew Tyler was more into the RX Bandits than the English Beat, but seemed to think they were okay as well.

Fun show. At one point theytook donations in the form of (paper) money being thrown onstage for smiletrain.org, an organization that fixes the cleft palates and other facial disfigurations of children, while they played the song "Tenderness"
