Greg and I were invited to a benefit reading for student publications. I think they are going to rethink inviting non-students in the future, but maybe I am not giving them enough credit. Greg's "Cassady" poem jokes about Ginsberg's pedophilia and the glorification of drugs and alcohol in Beat literature. Had some shout backs from audience members who didn't take kindly to someone berating one of their saints within the heart of their theology, but I thought it was ironic/funny as hell, and so did many people in the audience. And then I had to get up and read. Funny, right before the reading when I found out he was going to read "Cassady" I said, "Maybe I should go first." Hahaa. So I read "It's the Real Thing" and "RIP", doing the second part of RIP with the mike dangling away at my side while I filled the room with my cry.
