Virago, mon amour              Jun 15, 2007 - 09:27 AM

Sold my ride to the farm, State Farm. Getting rear- ended has it's plusses it seems. The thought after "Am I okay?" was "I wonder if the bike will be declared a "total" (insurance speak for "total loss"). Because bikes are basically a seat on top of an engine, minor accidents translate into major repairs. The first time I slid into an intersection it cost me $2,000 to repair it. I bought the bike for $3k, which kind of tells you how I felt about the bike at the time.

I learned from the insurance agency that it was a Yamaha Virago xv535S, the "S" standing for "special", as in retro look, retro streamlined look. An old-fashion looking logo on the tank. This upped the price of my 11 year old ride: $2,000 and change. I previously thought I cou;ld sell it for $1,500. I took it. I returned to the shop to retrieve the crumpled license plate where the guys bumper curled it under the screw plate. Unlocked my helmet and retrieved my insurance and registration under the seat.

"Who knows, maybe I'll go larger," I said to the shop guy, staring out over the 30 or so bikes kickstanded in various stages of disrepair and injury. "She was a good ride while it lasted."
